Step 2 of 3

Which kinds of foreign accounts do you have?

Tick what applies. A foreign financial account is one located outside the United States: a bank account, a securities or brokerage account, or certain other financial accounts.

Some accounts you don't report: an IRA or US tax-qualified retirement plan, an account at a US military banking facility, or a foreign account that holds only virtual currency (FinCEN Notice 2020-2). A US account is not foreign. When in doubt, check the IRS FBAR instructions.

Accounts you own by yourselfFBAR Part II

Accounts you have a financial interest in and own separately (not jointly).

Accounts you own jointly with someone elseFBAR Part III

A joint account with a spouse, parent or anyone else. You report the full highest value, not your share.

Accounts you can sign on but don't ownFBAR Part IV

Signature or other authority over an account with no financial interest of your own, such as an employer's account.

Do you have 25 or more foreign accounts in total?FBAR Item 14

At 25 or more accounts FinCEN's form changes: you report only the number and keep each account's details in your records. This tool lays out each account, so it doesn't fit that case — we'll point you to the right place.
